Day 10: Father and Son Fun - with Bird Nesting Kits

Your fascination with birds continues.  We watch them fly around our yard everyday and we listen for their tweets during our afternoon walks.  To go along with the bird feeders that you and Daddy made last week, we decided to help the birds out in a different way.  This time we are using items that birds can grab while creating their nests throughout the spring season.  It's been chilly for a couple of days, so we found them some warm items to use for their homes. 

I found two great ideas on how to make nesting kits, so we made them both. The first kit that you and Daddy constructed is made out of an onion bag. We found this fun idea, with full directions and materials needed, on a great kid-friendly blog, We Made That.  The second kit that held the nesting materials was inspired by an activity found on Home Made Simple and called for a spiral made out of galvanized wire. 

Before Daddy got home from work, we gathered up all of the items that were needed for each of the nesting kits.  We went out and brushed the dog, found lint in our dryer, picked out grass from our Easter baskets, and raided our aunt's sewing room for yarn and fabric. The rest was found in nature.

       

As soon as Daddy got home, we went outside to fill up the spiral and onion bag.  You had a lot of fun making the kits, but you really liked holding up the spiral for Daddy to fill.  When they were finished, we hung one on the porch and tied another to a small tree in the front yard.  I can't wait to go out later this month and see if we can find some nests that are made from our materials!  Hopefully the birds will be warm and cozy!
