Your fascination with birds continues. We watch them fly around our yard everyday and we listen for their tweets during our afternoon walks. To go along with the bird feeders that you and Daddy made last week, we decided to help the birds out in a different way. This time we are using items that birds can grab while creating their nests throughout the spring season. It's been chilly for a couple of days, so we found them some warm items to use for their homes.
I found two great ideas on how to make nesting kits, so we made them both. The first kit that you and Daddy constructed is made out of an onion bag. We found this fun idea, with full directions and materials needed, on a great kid-friendly blog, We Made That. The second kit that held the nesting materials was inspired by an activity found on Home Made Simple and called for a spiral made out of galvanized wire.
Before Daddy got home from work, we gathered up all of the items that were needed for each of the nesting kits. We went out and brushed the dog, found lint in our dryer, picked out grass from our Easter baskets, and raided our aunt's sewing room for yarn and fabric. The rest was found in nature.
As soon as Daddy got home, we went outside to fill up the spiral and onion bag. You had a lot of fun making the kits, but you really liked holding up the spiral for Daddy to fill. When they were finished, we hung one on the porch and tied another to a small tree in the front yard. I can't wait to go out later this month and see if we can find some nests that are made from our materials! Hopefully the birds will be warm and cozy!

Looks like you all had a lot of fun making those and they turned out so cute. I like the spiral idea I might have to try that too. It took about 2 weeks for the birds to start taking stuff from ours and now we have birds almost every day coming to get there nesting supplies.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link back to my site!
Thanks for the tip...I may have gotten disappointed if I didn't know it took so long! :)
DeleteI love this! Such a thoughtful thing for the little ones to do. I think even my older kids would be interested in this project. We love to feed the birds and this would just add to it. Just lovely!
ReplyDeleteThank you!! We put one up by a bird feeder that we mande, so we're hoping that they enjoy both. Grady has been intently watching for the birds! I agree with you - I think the older ones would enjoy it too!
DeleteOh yeah! We used empty wire suet holders to put our nest building material in! Our "Outside Play" post is here... http://likemamalikedaughter.blogspot.com/2012/04/wonderfull-full-of-wonder-wednesday_11.html
ReplyDeleteGreat! I just love bird watching...my grandfather used to get binoculars out all the time when I was at his house. :)
DeleteI just love a craft that combines nature and art! And I especially love a craft that a toddler can help out with.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing at The Outdoor Play Party!
Me too! My toddler is really getting comfortable being outside (and touching the grass, finally!) It's so much fun!
DeleteHow creative! Every animal needs something to keep their houses warm. I bet J would love making these too! Thank you so much for the idea, and for linking up to The Weekly Kid's Co-op!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I can't wait until the birds find them! We may be putting a few more bird feeders close by!
DeleteI adore this idea!!!! We have always loved doing bird feeders but this idea is so unique. I can't wait...
ReplyDeleteI know! I was so excited when I came across these two ideas! They pretty to look at too, while we wait for the birds to come! :)
DeleteWhat great bird feeders - love all the colours :-) And how great that father and son made them together! By the way, your son's hat is super cute :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing on Happy Family Times!
Thank you! I love watching my two guys work together. Oh, and it will be sad day when he won't let Mommy pick his hats out or put them on him anymore. :)
