Winter Solstice Celebration

Today is the official start to the winter season.  We awoke this morning to the dropping of temperatures and a promise of snow.  Not long after we began our day did the first snowflake fall from the sky ~ the perfect way to welcome the coming season.  As we busied ourselves with preparations for the upcoming holiday, the snow continued to fall and the flakes only seemed to get bigger and bigger.

By nightfall, we had a soft blanket of snow covering the grass with no indication of the snow ceasing in the near future.  Lucky for us, we were toasty warm inside as dinner simmered in the oven.  Before Daddy came home, we set the table with the tin can lanterns that they had constructed only days earlier and rushed to the freezer to remove the star-shaped peanut butter cookies that we baked this Sunday ~ special for the occasion.

  

Not only did we arrange to be seated around a tabletop glowing with candles, but we also planned for a bit of outside ambiance as well, with our ice lanterns that made together just yesterday. They were lovely nestled in a thin layer of snow right outside our patio doors.  

A quiet dinner surrounded by the flickering glimmer of candles and the soft flakes swirling all around outside was just what we needed to look towards this new season in our lives.  

We ended the evening with a few stories read by candlelight by the Christmas tree, as we breathed in the crisp pine smell and delighted in the twinkling of colorful lights.  We look forward to all this season has to offer in the coming months, and relish in the time we have to enjoy it as a family.
