Fizzing Rocks with baking soda and vinegar
Inspired by one of Mama Scout's Monday Missions to Start an Adventure Fund ~ a fun way to bring magic into our week. We save up our loose change for seven days and turn it into a fun family adventure to celebrate Mondays!

It's been quite some time since we shared one of our Monday's {Mini} Family Adventures on the blog.  The holiday season kept up quite busy and we're just now settling back into our routine.  This week we decided to try a little science experiment with the spare change that we collected and have some fun!  I've been wanting to try this activity for long while now - ever since I saw this post about Dissolving Rocks from Reading Confetti back in July!  It looked like so much fun and we thought you would get a kick out watching 'baking soda rocks' fizz and dissolve in vinegar.

We went to the store the night before to purchase the most important ingredients for this experiment - baking soda and vinegar!  Next, we scoured the house to find little treasures to stick inside.  Since Valentine's Day is coming up, Daddy and I placed heart-shaped marbles and seashells inside, and decided to color a few of them red.  The fizzing rocks needed to set overnight, so we created them after you went to sleep.  (You can find the complete instructions for creating these rocks over at Reading Confetti.)

They completely hardened overnight and were ready for us to try out after dinner the next day.  We found a clear pitcher and added the vinegar and water so that you would be able to toss the rocks in and see the chemical reaction.  We got them all ready for you and let the {mini} adventure begin!

You couldn't get over all of the bubbles that formed when you tossed rock after rock in the pitcher.  Since you were so excited and threw most of them in at once, we had to wait until the bubbles disappeared before we could find the treasures hidden inside.  Once we sifted through all of the leftover baking soda, you took you findings and headed to your play kitchen to add them to mix of sensory ingredients!
