Lately, my son has started to find his independence in the kitchen. He absolutely loves helping me cook and is often eager to set the table before mealtime. Since he thrives on doing things "all by himself," I decided to set up a small space in our kitchen that was entirely kid-friendly. I have an floating island in the center of my kitchen that is the perfect level for him and has just enough room to store his own personal items.
Inside he'll find a shelf that contains his cups, plasticware, plates, and bowls so he can set his place at the table or grab a bowl for snack time. The bottom shelf has two tubs filled with healthy snacks that he is allowed to pick out during certain times throughout the day. I also added a mixing bowl, a couple of kid's cookbooks, and an apron to the handle of the cupboard, so that whenever it's time to cook or bake he can have his own tools to help Mama. It's always a wonderful feeling to see his pride and independence take shape in the smallest of ways.
Now, for the fun! If your kids love to help you in the kitchen or you're looking for more ways to involve them with mealtime prep, look no further. Here's a giveaway that I know you're sure to love!

ReplyDeleteI did an area like this for my daughter. She's not quite 3. She keeps taking all the utensils and using them in her play kitchen. How do you prevent your child from pilfering the special area in the kitchen?
I'm still working on that, Kelly! :) We try to keep the play things and the real kitchen items as different as possible. My son doesn't always try to play with them in his play kitchen, but he will toss them on the floor every once in a while or try to sneak an extra snack. I've just be reinforcing the idea that these are only for use when we are eating a meal and I'll make him put his snack back if he's had one already.
DeleteOne of my daughter's favorite snack is Greek yogurt with flax seed and wheat germ. She loves putting it all in the bowl herself. She also loves ants on a log, a special snack she makes with daddy. Suzie Showalter

ReplyDeleteMy kids both have a lot of favourites, but they have to be themed! So I have to make it look like a face or a boat etc... Running out of ideas now!!!
ReplyDeleteMy son loves cheese!
ReplyDeleteMy son loves broccoli, carrots, sugar snap peas and celery with hummus for dipping! Oh, and cheese too. :)
ReplyDeleteMy son loves applesauce and cheese!
ReplyDeleteWe did a "play" cupboard in the kitchen early on and now also some space for her cutlery, crockery etc. Her favourite snack is almost any type of berry (especially raspberries or blueberries) or an apple. Although sometimes she'll ask in hope that we might have some chocolate (not often) or today she asked for lemonade, which she has never had and we don't drink!
ReplyDeleteMy son loves crackers, in all different shapes and sizes! I was so delighted when he loved the handmade goldfish crackers I made, full of yummy, "real" ingredients. featheredneststudio [at] gmail [dot] com
ReplyDeleteMy daughter loves nothing more than bananas or nanas as she calls them. But only if she can peel them herself!
ReplyDeleteMy son loves cheese. I have all his plates and container at his level. He loves to pull out what he wants to have meal served on.
ReplyDeleteBananas! :)
