Birthday Morning Traditions {from Coffee Cups and Crayons}

I am so excited to have Megan from Coffee Cups and Crayons guest posting on Connecting Family and Seoul today! Birthdays are a special time in our household and we love finding new traditions that you can share with your children - especially during Birthday Week!  Here are a few that are special to Megan and her family.

Family traditions are very important to us. They build shared memories and experiences that connect us to each other and with each other. They become part of our family story and the ritual of the traditions brings comfort and excitement. Especially on birthdays!

Birthday Morning Tradition for Kids

When my brother and sister and I were younger my mother would decorate our bedroom doors with crepe paper while we slept on the night before our birthdays. It was exciting to wake up and see the colored paper announcing that it was your special day.
When I had kids I continued the tradition and through the years we have been to add to it. When my oldest was two and very interested in balloons we taped two balloons to the middle of her door. Eventually this turned into making their new age out of balloons in the middle of their doors with the crepe paper around it.

Birthday Pancakes in the Shape of Your Age!

Another birthday morning tradition in our family is pancakes! My husband makes each kid special pancakes in the shape of his or her new age and then we sing to the birthday kid and he/she gets to blow out candles on the pancakes. My husband may have to do a couple practice pancakes to get the number right, but it is worth it to see the excitement on their faces.

  2. Love these ideas! For our tradition we make a giant number out of colored paper and take a bunch of photos with the birthday boy holding the number.

  3. Love your traditions! This past year we decided to do special outings with each of the boys on their birthdays and it went so well that I think we might have to make it a tradition.

    1. So fun! When I was younger two of my aunts would take each of us out for a special outing for our birthdays. It was great to just have their undivided attention.
